The Seattle Sounders were able to defeat their arch rivals the Portland Timbers for the first time in the 2011 MLS regular season, winning the July 10 encounter between the two clubs 3-2. The Sounders faced the Timbers earlier on in the 2011 MLS regular season, but were forced to settle for the draw. This time around, both teams were able to get their offenses going, giving Sounders FC fans a memorable game to remember.
With the win, the Sounders stretch their undefeated streak to eight games, and climb back to the second spot in the MLS Western Conference table.
The July 10 encounter between the two teams started as a defensive encounter, with neither team scoring in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, both teams loosened up and the goals started coming.
The Portland Timbers struck first, thanks to an own goal by Sounders FC defender Jeff Park. Seattle fired back ten minutes later, when forward Freddy Montero scored on a beautifully played free kick.
Shorty after, Portland followed up with another goal of their own, when forward Jorge Perlaza scored off a nicely played pass from Diego Chara in the 69th minute.
Freddy Montero fired back for the Sounders five minutes later, getting the ball past Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins for the second time in the game.
The Sounders later capitalized on a hard foul by Portland defender Eric Brunner that resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to the visitors. Osvaldo Alonso had no problem getting the shot past Perkins, and the Sounders took their first lead of the game in the 82nd minute.
The Seattle Sounders next game will be against the Colorado Rapids on July 16. The Sounders are only 4 points behind the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Western Conference table, and they'll try to close that gap when they suit up against the Rapids.
