Despite having one of their worst offensive performances of the season, the San Antonio Silver Stars were able to defeat the Atlanta Dream 92-86 on June 26. With the win, the Silver Stars now have the best record in the WNBA at 6-1, as well as the team's best start in its 15 year history.
Both teams struggled offensively throughout the game, but the Silver Stars were fortunate enough to get a solid effort from off-season acquisition Jia Perkins. Perkins was on fire against the Dream, shooting 64 percent from the field. Perkins was also effective from long range, converting on 2 of her 4 three point attempts. Perkins finished the game with a team high 25 points and 8 rebounds for the Silver Stars.
Given how badly the Silver Star's offense struggled against the Atlanta Dream on June 26, it no surprise Perkin's teammates were appreciative of her efforts.
"Not only is she a good scorer, but she's someone that gets a lot of people involved and has rebounded like crazy these last few games," Silver Stars guard Becky Hammon said. "We just need her to keep being productive."
Perkins didn't win the game for the Silver Stars all by herself; she got some much needed help from Rookie Danielle Adams as well. Adams shot 60 percent against the Dream, finishing the game with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Becky Hammon was the third leading scorer for the Silver Stars, finishing the game with 17 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.
Coco Miller tried everything she could to give the Dream the win, but at the end the Silver Stars proved to be the better team. Big free throws by Hammon in the final minutes of the game helped the Silver Stars seal the deal.
"I thought our effort was absolutely perfect," Dream coach Marynell Meadors said. "In the last two minutes, we had a chance to win the game, but we just didn't win the game."
The Silver Stars will suit up again when they visit the Chicago Sky on June 28. Chicago is currently 3-1 at home, and the Silver Stars will have their work cut out for them.
