Silver Stars outplay Sky, improve to 7-1

The San Antonio Silver Stars continue their solid start to the 2011 WNBA season, defeating the Chicago Sky 84-74 on June 28. With the win, the Silver Stars improve their record to 7-1, a task that has never been accomplished in their 15 year history.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well in their June 28 encounter. The Silver Stars did get decent performances from a few key players, and that proved to be the difference maker in the game.

"Defensively our team got better as the game went on especially in the second half," Becky Hammon said. "It was just a grind tonight. It wasn't a pretty game but we found a way win. I thought our post players did an exceptional job hitting big shots for us and just playing really good defense."

Forward Sophia Young led the Silver Stars in scoring against the Sky, finishing the game with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Rookie Danielle Adams gave the Silver Stars some much needed help as well, dropping 16 points on the Sky. Becky Hammon, Danielle Robinson and Ruth Riley all had decent performances for the Silver Stars, finishing with 14, 10, and 10 points respectively.

San Antonio guard Jia Perkins who was coming off her best game of the season, struggled when she met her former team for the first time. Perking shot the ball poorly against the Sky, shooting 20 percent from the field.

Despite their poor shooting, the Silver Stars played really well as a team against the Sky, finding ways to get points in the fourth quarter.

"You have to build your play with streaks and we got some stops," Silvers Coach Dan Hughes told reporters after the game. "We had some timely shots. Our execution just got better at the right time of the game."

The Silver Stars will get another chance to make franchise history when they face the New York Liberty on July 1st.
