The San Antonio Silver Stars are off to a good start in the 2011 WNBA regular season, winning their first three games without their starting center Jayne Appel. Former General Manager Dan Hughes returned to his former role as the team's head coach, and the move seems to be working out well for the Silver Stars.
With their 3-0 record, the Silver Stars have the best record in the WNBA right now. The Silver Star's next game will be against the Phoenix Mercury, who are yet to win a game this season.
San Antonio Silver Stars center Jayne Appel might also be making her return on June 17. Appel, who was bothered by knee problems throughout the 2010 WNBA regular season, had reconstructive surgery on the troublesome knee during the off-season.
At this point in the season, the Silver Star's rebounding seems to be their only weakness so far. The Silver Stars have been unable to secure rebounds in their first three games, losing the battle on the boards 114-81.
"We weren't a very big team compared to the other teams that we played, but that necessarily doesn't say we can't rebound," said Silver Star forward Sophia Young. "We have to box out better and go pursue the ball better."
Even with the poor rebounding, the Silver Stars have been on fire thanks to the incredible play of their bench, especially rookie Danielle Adams, who put up 32 points against the Atlanta Dream.
The Silver Stars still remember the humiliating loss they suffered at the hands of the Mercury in the 2010 WNBA conference finals, getting swept by their conference rivals. The Stars will try to get some payback when they face the Mercury on June 17, and increase their regular season record to 4-0. The Mercury haven't started a season 0-3 in three years, and they will also be motivated to get a win against the Silver Stars.
The Silver Stars should be proud of their great start in the 2011 WNBA regular season, as they are clearly the team to watch in women's basketball right now.
