The San Antonio Silver Stars will get another opportunity to make franchise history when they face the Chicago Sky on June 28. Chicago was the better team last season winning both times the two teams met, but things have definitely changed in the WNBA power rankings.
The Silver Stars are already off to the team's best start in its 15 year history, playing arguably the best basketball in the WNBA right now. The Sky on the other hand, have gone cold after starting off the 2011 WNBA regular season on a positive note. The Sky have lost three of their last four games and will have their work cut out for them against the Silver Stars.
Silver Star guard Jia Perkins who was traded from the Sky for Michelle Snow during the off season, has been a significant contributor for San Antonio. Perkins carried the Silver Stars on her back in her last outing against the Atlanta Dream, leading the team in points and rebounds.
"Not only is (Perkins) a good scorer, but she's someone that gets a lot of people involved and has rebounded like crazy these last few games," Jia's teammate Becky Hammon said. "We just need her to keep being productive."
With just seven games played in the 2011 WNBA regular season, it's really impressive how the Silver Stars have come together as a team. Hammon, Perkins, Sophia Young, and rookie Danielle Adams have all been very productive for the Silver Stars. Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes' decision to return to his former coaching duties has also had a positive effect on the team.
The Silver Stars will need to figure out a way to stop Sky center Sylvia Fowles, who is currently leading the WNBA in scoring with her 22.4 points per game. As long as the Silver Stars can contain Fowles, they should have no problems securing the win.
