The San Antonio Silver Stars will try to get the nasty taste of defeat out of their mouths, when they face the Los Angeles Sparks on July 12. The Silver Stars' 7-1 start in the 2011 WNBA season, was the team's best in franchise history.
Unfortunately for the Silver Stars, they ran into the New York Liberty, a team that seems to have the San Antonio team figured out.
With their record now at 7-3, the Silver Stars no longer own the best record in the WNBA; they are currently tied with the Minnesota Lynx for the best record in the league's Western conference.
Luckily for the Silver Stars, the Los Angeles Sparks are yet to win a road game in the 2011 WNBA season. The Silver Stars will hope to capitalize on this fact, when the two teams meet in Texas.
The Silver Stars had no problems taking care of the Sparks in their last encounter, winning the June 24 game 90-80. This time around, the Sparks will have a new coach when they face the Silver Stars. Joe Bryant, father of Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, will be making his return to the Sparks against the Silver Stars.
"I felt it was necessary to take the team in a different direction," Sparks General Manager Penny Toler said. "Joe's familiarity with the Sparks organization puts us in the best possible position to compete going forward."
The Silver Stars struggled defensively in their encounters against the Liberty, and they'll need to pick their defense up to get past the Sparks. While the Sparks are currently the fifth team in the WNBA's Western conference, the Silver Stars cannot afford to take them lightly. With the way the WNBA standings are looking right now, the Silver Stars cannot afford another loss.
