Liberty hand Silver Stars second loss of the season

The San Antonio Silver Stars' undefeated road game streak came to an end on July 1, losing 81-75 to the New York Liberty. The Liberty won the season series between the two teams last year, and will be satisfied with the win against the hot Silver Stars.

The Silver Stars struggled offensively against the Liberty, shooting 34.2 percent from the field. Defensively, the Silver Stars found themselves unable to guard the Liberty, allowing them to shoot 49.1 percent from the field, and 53.8 percent from beyond the arc.

"We didn't play particularly well," Becky Hammon told reporters after the game. "We didn't execute our defensive game plan the way we wanted to and we didn't shoot the ball well. It's hard to win when you shoot 35 percent, you're not going to win many games home or away shooting that kind of percentage."

Rookie Danielle Adams led the Silver Stars in scoring against the Liberty, finishing the game with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Hammon and Sophia Young both finished the game with 16 points for the Silver Stars.

Not surprisingly, Cappie Pondexter led the way for the Liberty, finishing the game with 19 points and 5 assists. Plenette Pierson was right behind her, making big baskets in the final quarter that helped the Liberty win the game. Pierson finished the game with 14 points and 5 rebounds for the Liberty.

"I'm a veteran in this league. I've been there, done that many times before," Pierson said. "It's not how you play the entire game, it's how you finish. I knew in order to help my team get a win I had to come in there and probably play big minutes and make good baskets. My teammates found me in great positions."

The Silver Stars will get an opportunity for some payback when the two teams meet again on July 8.
