The New York Liberty handed the San Antonio Silver Stars their first losing streak in the 2011 WNBA regular season, defeating the Stars 76-73 on their home court. With the win, the Liberty are now 4-0 in their last four encounters against the Silver Stars.
Becky Hammon led the Silver Star in scoring against the Liberty, finishing the game with 18 points and 4 assists. Hammon did have some difficulty taking care of the ball against the Liberty, turning the ball over seven times during the game. Hammon also struggled at the free throw line, especially in the final minutes of the game.
"I can't remember the last time I shot free throws like that," Hammon told reporters. "This loss hurts because we should have had that one."
The Silver Stars also got some help from Jia Perkins, who made her first start of the season for San Antonio. Perkins finished the game with 13 points and 4 rebounds for the Stars. Sophia Young, Danielle Robinson, and Danielle Adams all had decent performances for the Silver Stars, finishing with 10, 11, and 12 points respectively.
Unfortunately for the Silver Stars, their performance wasn't enough to help them get past the New York Liberty.
The Liberty were impressive offensively against Stars, shooting 47 percent from the field, with all five starters scoring in double digits. Not surprisingly, Cappie Pondexter led the Liberty against the Silver Stars, finishing the game with an impressive 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists.
With the loss, the San Antonio Silver Stars are now tied with the Minnesota Lynx for the best record in the WNBA's Western Conference at 7-3. With teams like the Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm trailing right behind the Silver Stars, they'll need to win their next game against the Los Angeles Sparks on July 12, or watch their franchise record setting start in the 2011 WNBA season go to waste.
