DeShawn Stevenson arrested days after winning first NBA championship

Moments after the Dallas Mavericks won the 2011 NBA Finals, DeShawn Stevenson had some harsh words for the Miami Heat, calling them 'classless' for their behavior during the series. In my opinion, calling out your opponent after a victory is the very definition of classless, and I wasn't surprised when reports came in that Stevenson had been arrested a few days later.

Police officers were called to an apartment complex in Irving, Texas, after receiving complaints about an intoxicated person wandering in the area. When police arrived at the scene, they approached Stevenson who appeared to be intoxicated. Stevenson was unable to pass a sobriety test, and he was arrested and charged with a Class C misdemeanor.

"They felt he was a danger to himself and others," a spokesman for the Irving police said. "Basically, he was intoxicated to a point where they [police] didn't feel comfortable letting him walk away or leave. They didn't have any other options at that point."

Stevenson was later released on a $475 bond, and later spoke to reporters about the situation. Stevenson felt the police report wasn't accurate, implying his celebrity status might have had something to do with his arrest. Stevenson did seem humbled by his arrest.

"I slept in a one-room cell for almost five hours, until my wife came and picked me up, and to me it hurts because that's not a way a champion should celebrate on his way home in Dallas, sleeping in a cell over a $400 fine," Stevenson told KDFW after his release.

Stevenson should probably spend more time controlling his behavior, and less time worrying about the Miami Heat's superstars.

Say what you want about LeBron James, but the reality is that he carries himself better than a majority of athletes in professional sports. Despite how young James was when he entered the NBA, he has never been involved in any incidents off the court. In an age where sex scandals and DUI's have become the norm, that goes a long way in my book.
