Just when things started looking good for the Seattle Sounders FC, their luck finally changed for the worse against D.C. United on May 4.
The Sounders didn't do well against United, losing the game 2-1. For the Sounders, the loss was particularly devastating since a win would have given them a tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy for the top spot in the MLS Western Conference.
The goalkeepers turned out to be the difference between the two teams, as both clubs had multiple chances to score in the game. Unfortunately for the Sounders, goalkeeper Kasey Keller couldn't keep up with his counterpart across the field, allowing two goals to sneak past him.
D.C. United scored the first goal of the match, thanks to Josh Wolff's goal in the 31st minute. D.C. would build on their lead in the second half, scoring another goal in 7 minutes. The Sounders had numerous attempts at D.C. United's goalkeeper Bill Hamid, but were unable to get anything past the 20-year-old.
The Sounders finally got a break when a penalty kick was awarded to them in the 71st minute of the game. Seattle forward Brad Evans was able to convert on the penalty, reducing D.C. United's lead to a goal. With the lead cut in half, the Sounders increased the intensity of their attack, testing Bill Hamid a few more times before the end of regulation. Hamid held his ground, securing the win for his club.
Given how rough the beginning of the 2011 MLS season was for the Seattle Sounders, fans should be glad that their team is currently tied for the third spot in the western conference. The Sounders' next match will be on the road against the Columbus Crew on May 7.
After the Sounders meet up with the Crew, they will play their next three games at home. At Quest field, the Galaxy are the only team that has been able to defeat the Sounders. Hopefully by the time the Sounders are done with their three-game homestand, they be sitting at the top of the MLS Western Conference rankings.
