Moving is one of those tasks owners of small businesses dread. For one, there is always the nostalgia involved with staying in a particular place for an extended period of time. When I had to move my small business, there were a few steps I took, which helped make the moving process a lot easier.
Planning ahead
You definitely want to handle all your moving requirements ahead of time, and not wait till the last minute like many small businesses often do. Leave a few days for errors when moving your power, telecommunications and other services. Provide your employees with clear instructions on what their responsibilities are.
Think outside the Box
As a small business owner, you should already be used to thinking creatively, and should do the same when it comes to moving your small business. Large moving companies might be better for larger small businesses, but if your small business is on the smaller size, you might want to consider hiring people from a temp agency to do your heavy lifting.
Don't procrastinate
Many small businesses end up waiting till their moving date, before packing up the items to be moved. Items should be stored in cardboard boxes ahead of time. Item too large to fit in a box should have tags, displaying their destinations to the movers. On moving day, all you and your employees should be doing is supervising the movers, and unpacking at your new location.
Moving date
You should try your best to select a slow or non-work day for your moving date. If your small business is operational Monday to Friday, and closed on the weekends; it only makes sense to schedule a weekend for your moving date.
Relax
Even with the best planners, things are still bound to go wrong. Instead of losing your composure and making matters worse, try to think positively and look for solutions.
Inform clients
Obviously, you don't want to move without giving your clients your new address. Send your new information to clients via email lists or other systems you use. If possible, leave a sign at your old location, with your new business address information.
By simply following the steps listed above, you should be able to minimize the stress of moving your small business. Even with the best planning, moving is never fun. However, with proper planning it shouldn't be the worst experience in the world either.
