The Seattle Sounders FC snapped their four-game winless streak on May 30, handing the Atlanta Silverbacks a 5-1 thrashing. With the win, the Sounders advance to the fourth round of the 2012 U.S. Open Cup, where they'll face Cal FC on June 5.
"It was very important, especially seeing some of the other results, some of the other MLS teams losing to some of the teams in lower divisions, who are really motivated to come up and play some of the high-level teams," Sounders midfielder Alex Caskey said after the game. "So it was really good for us to come out and score a couple of goals early and get on top of them, then follow through and get the win."
It took the Sounders a little while to get their offense going, but the goals started coming in the 45th minute, when Andy Rose found the back of the Silverbacks' post. Osvaldo Alonso doubled the Sounders' lead in the 47th minute, beating Atlanta goalkeeper Joe Nasco with a well-played shot.
The Silverbacks tried to fight their way back a few minutes later, thanks to Reinaldo Navia, who got one past Bryan Meredith. Unfortunately for Atlanta, their comeback attempt only fired the Sounders up, with Alex Caskey redoubling their lead one minute after. Sammy Ochoa added two goals of his own shortly after, removing any possibility of an Atlanta comeback.
"It's always a lot more fun when you score goals; it makes it a lot easier," Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid told reporters after the game. "Getting the goal early in the second half helped us and then the response when we got the third goal -- Caskey's response to their goal right away -- is what I think really finished the game off."
Given how much the Sounders' offense struggled in their last few outings, it was certainly nice to see them score with ease against the Silverbacks. I hope they keep it up in their next game against Cal FC, as they try to become the first team to win four consecutive U.S. Open Cup titles.
