Why Giving Ballpark Estimates for a Remodeling Job is a Slippery Task

Why is giving ballpark estimates for a remodeling job a slippery task? Any contractor that specializes in bathroom remodeling can easily answer that question.\
It’s not so easy for clients to figure out the answer to that question though, since from their point of view, it seems like predicting how much any particular remodeling job will cost should be an easy task.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way in the real world.
If you’ve ever tried to get a bathroom in your home remodeled, you’ve probably noticed that most contractors are reluctant to give you an exact figure of how much the entire process will cost.
Don’t worry, they’re not trying to scam you off a few buck, their reluctance is simply due to the fact it’s extremely difficult to accurately predict how much any particular bathroom remodeling job will cost.
So to answer the initial question, why is giving ballpark estimates for a remodeling job a slippery task?

Well, that comes down to several important factors.
Factors such as the initial condition of the bathroom, the current time of the year (since prices for materials can vary according to the season), and the location of the project are all very important. If the client wants the project expedited, that will typically lead to extra charges.
Obviously, it’s virtually impossible to figure out how much material and labor it will take to complete any particular project, so contractors are naturally hesitant to give clients an exact figure. For one, everything that needs to be repaired or replaced isn’t always visible to the contractor during the first inspection, so it’s not uncommon for more charges to be added to the initial estimate once the project begins.
That, my friends, is why giving ballpark estimates for a remodeling job is a slippery task.
