If Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs) emerges victorious during his scheduled
May 4 bout against a yet to be determined opponent, his next fight will be
against Mayweather (43-0-0, 26 KOs).
"[Vice President] Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions
came to Guadalajara and we agreed that Saul and Floyd would share the evening
in May. We already reached a financial agreement [for May], and a guarantee
that we will face [Mayweather] in September in Las Vegas," Chepo said, per
Boxingscene.com.
"The worth of Saul was confirmed by the large attendance at the [MGM
Grand], even though on that same day Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fought 'Maravilla'
Martinez a few blocks away. In addition, Canelo finished Josesito Lopez with
the force that was expected. Mayweather had difficulties in defeating Puerto
Rico's Miguel Cotto, who even landed some big punches. We believe that it is
time for Canelo to show what is made of."
Music to the ears of many boxing fans I'm sure.
Austin Trout (26-0-0, 14 KOs) seems to be next logical
opponent for Canelo right now, but I'm not sure the 22 year-old would want to
take such a huge risk with a fight against Mayweather -- who will likely face
Robert Guerrero on May 4 -- hanging in the balance.
Fighting Trout would actually be a good way for Canelo to
prepare for a counter-puncher like Mayweather, as he obviously wouldn’t have
much of a chance against "Money" if he can’t get past Austin.
However, Alvarez stands to make a lot of money in a fight
against Mayweather, and at his young age, losing to the best boxer around right
now wouldn’t really have a negative impact on his reputation. He'll still be regarded as one of the most
promising young boxers around regardless of what happens against Floyd.
