Delvin Rodriguez was warmly welcomed at his home town, Danbury (Connecticut) this past Thursday at Danbury Billiards by the ardent crowd of the city, who came in to confer their new champion with the memorable welcome of lifetime.
Mayor Mark Boughton was also there among the boisterous crowd of over 200. Rodriguez was pretty excited seeing the response from his passionate fans and the Mayor Boughton, who specially arrived at Danbury Billiards to welcome the sportsman with fervor for his victory over Pawel Wolak at Madison Square Garden on Dec.3.
Delvin was then honored by the Mayor Boughton, who made it official that Dec.22, 2011 as Delvin Rodriguez Day in the city. Michael McLachlan, the State Senator was also present at the auspicious occasion to grace Delvin with a distinction awarded by the Connecticut State Senate.
In addition to the award, Rodriguez was also awarded with other honors recently such as two sports giant publications – Sports Illustrated and Ring 8 termed the clash between Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wol as ‘Fight of the Year 2011’.
In the annual Boxing Awards for 2011, the battle between the two was coined as ‘Fight of the Year 2011’ and Delvin took it as a big honor.
The heroic battle between Delvin Rodriguez-Pawel Wolak took place on July 15 in New York City at The Roseland Ballroom. ESPN2 aired this unforgettable fight live in its popular segment ‘Friday Night Fights’. The battle turned classic that led the channel to rebroadcast it as first ever unscheduled replay.
The unforgettably memorable 10 round fight was attended by a mammoth electrifying audience. But it was scored a majority draw that led to a rematch on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito fight card, which took place at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 3. Over 20,000 fervent fans enjoyed the rematch where Delvin Rodriguez showed his class by delivering the best performance of his career, defeating Wolak in the most thrilling clash.
