Jiu jitsu has become a popular choice for martial artist over the past decade, mainly because of the success mixed martial arts companies (MMA) like the UFC have enjoyed. Many have reawakened their passion for the martial arts and have dived into the exciting and rewarding world of jiu jitsu.
Brazilian Jiu jitsu (BJJ), has exploded in the states, thanks to the Gracie family and their domination of earlier MMA competitions. The Gracie family modified ancient jiu jitsu techniques, and made them more effective for smaller people. Today BJJ is one of the most popular martial arts in the world and is expected to continue growing rapidly.
One of the best advantages of learning BJJ is the confidence that comes with acquiring an arsenal of self-defense moves. BJJ teaches you how to quickly end a confrontation, by using joint locks or submission holds. What makes jiu jitsu even more effective is the strong emphasis on rolling (sparring). Most BJJ classes require students to roll with other students at the end of every class. This sparring time is where skills are perfected, since you get to practice your skills against an opponent that is actually resisting. After rolling for a few months, it is hard not to feel confident in your ability to defend yourself.
BJJ is also a very intensive cardiovascular exercise. BJJ techniques require you to perform tasks such as picking people up, or breaking their posture. Coupled with the time spent rolling in your average jiu jitsu class, you're guaranteed to burn a lot of fat and tone your muscles.
Making new friends is another benefit to training in BJJ. At the school, you will meet different people from all works of life. Some might be professional fighters, while others might be training just for the cardio. The close nature of jiu jitsu fosters strong relationships and camaraderie between students; and some of your BJJ partners can end up becoming your closest friends.
While jiu jitsu isn't for everyone, its' effects on a person's life can be truly amazing.
