Duke Blue Devils Advance Despite Tough Showing by Wolverines
The Duke Blue Devils pull off a tough win against the Michigan Wolverines, defeating the eight seeded team 73-71. With the win, Duke long-time head Coach Mike Krzyzewski secured his 900th win as a NCAA division I coach. With his victory, Krzyzewski is now only two games from tying up his former mentor Bob Knight, for the most wins in NCAA basketball history.
The Michigan team really came out and tested the Duke defense, shooting over 50 percent from the field for the entire game. Nolan Smith was the top performer for Duke, putting up 24 points and 4 rebounds. Smith got a lot of help from his teammate Kyle Singler, who finished the game with 13 points and 8 rebounds for Duke. The game between the Duke Blue Devils and the Michigan Wolverines was so close; the winner was not decided until the final seconds of the game. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski could not have asked for a better way to secure his 900th win.
With their two point victory over the Wolverines, Duke moves on to the Sweet-Sixteen round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The Blue Devils' next game will be on March 24, when they face the Arizona Wildcats, who are coming off a close game of their own. Like many of the games we have already seen in the tournament, this should be another competitive game, with both teams battling to advance to the elite-eight stage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
With only three wins needed for Coach Krzyzewski to set a new record for the most wins in NCAA division I men's basketball, it is certain Duke players will be playing their hardest in the next few games. Coach Krzyzewski is one of the few coaches that players truly respect. While the modest coach consistently tries to downplay his many achievements on the basketball court, I'm sure deep down; he'll rather break the NCAA division I record during the March tournament. Duke will be tested by the Wildcats on March 24, but in the end the Blue Devils will prevail.
