Utah Guard Deron Williams Gets Traded to New Jersey Nets

The New Jersey Nets missed out on the opportunity to add Carmelo Antony to their lineup. They made up for it rather quickly and managed to add one of the top point guards in the NBA unto their roster. On Feb 23 2011, the New Jersey Nets acquired Deron Williams from the Utah Jazz. In exchange for Deron Williams, the Nets had to give up point guard Devin Harris, along with Derrick Favors and two future first round picks.

The trade came as a surprise to fans, since most of the trade discussions surrounding the New Jersey Nets have been focused on Carmelo Anthony. With the trade, the New Jersey Nets add one of the best point guards in the NBA to their roster. Deron Williams is averaging 21.3 points and 9.7 rebounds in the NBA 2010/11 season, and should be a great investment for the New Jersey Nets in the future.

Unfortunately for the Nets, they might have already dug themselves in a hole with their poor 17-40 performance so far in the NBA 2010/11 season. They are currently 10 ½ games from the eight spot in the NBA Eastern Conference, and it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible for them to even earn a spot in the playoffs.

The trade should pay-off in the future for the New Jersey Nets. With the addition of Deron Williams the Nets add another A-level player to their team to complement Brook Lopez. With the trade, the Nets also send a clear message to players around the league of their intentions to build a top NBA team. With the addition of Deron Williams, the 2010/11 NBA season doesn't have to be a total waste for the New Jersey Nets; they now have the remainder of the season to improve their team chemistry in preparation for the 2011/12 season.

The acquisition of LeBron James and Chris Bosh by the Miami Heat has motivated owners in the eastern conference. Teams are now searching for their "big three", and the Eastern conference might very well be on its way to becoming the dominant conference in the NBA.

While the New Jersey Nets are not even close to competing with the big boys in the Eastern Conference like the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics, they have made a solid move that should pay off greatly in the future.
